This was a fun Candy Corn Halloween Card that was fun and easy to make! Make sure to check out how to make yours!
Halloween is a fun ride and this year’s card adds a little glamour with foiling. I used Black 7.5-inch square envelopes and cut the final card size to a 6.75-inch square. The treat cup takes up some space. I did decorate the envelope, but it fits just fine without any decorating.
Instructions:
- For the card itself I used Curious Skin Black Cover. I used this partly for the deep contrast between matte and shiny. The second reason was the thickness. I like cards to hold up to handling. I found the 100lb weight went through my laser well for the repeat foiling. The foiling does add a thickness that has to be accounted for when you do layers of foiling.
- I also used a laminator. I run it through a couple of times, top to bottom and sideways. I cover mine with copy paper and I use the plastic board they provide. I think the foils are heavier than others I have used. It also helps to add a dark layer of toner; I set my page set up for the printer to the darkest settings possible.
- Print the leaf pattern on the Black paper and apply either of the foils. I used the darker one first, the Green from https://colorfoils.com/foils.html. Then I put the paperback in the printer going the other way and added more toner. I then printed with the Green Satin, a lighter green. Use what you have, and I have found these foils to adhere well. I get them from Colorfoils.com; they are thick. I did not use the tack cloth. I ran it first on another paper and thought it smeared the toner. Personal opinion.
The question I wanted to answer is whether you could keep foiling for many layers. The answer is yes, but I will need to demonstrate that another time. I initially chose a 105lb paper and after 2 layers of foil, it was too thick to manually feel through my printer, and the image ghosted from hanging up for the thickness. I applied 6 layers, but since it was uncontrollable, I could not duplicate it: maybe another time, on thinner paper. For this card, I wanted a sure thing.
- Using your Sizzix Circle, 3″ die, center a hole on the front of the card for the treat box. I put a piece of copy paper on the foiling and put it face down as I thought it would protect it a little from the Big Shot Pro roller.
- Score your paper at 6.75″ and add additional Black paper to make the card long enough on the back. I cut a piece of 6.75″ x 6.75″ Black and attached it to the inside of the card using many rows of ScorTape. I aligned it at the crease, seated on the back of the front, and pushed the short back piece down. I found it easier to make sure it closed with the front aligned.
- Using your Sizzix Circles, the 3″ & 3.75″, cut a frame for your treat box using Stardream Metallics Flame Cover. Put some Cosmic Shimmer Acrylic Glue around the circle and align it with the open circle. It has an open working time, so push it down and let it sit a few minutes.
- Add some 1/8″ ScorTape to the front of the treat cup and add some glue. Push it through the back of the hole and hold it a bit.
- Cut a 4.5″ square of the Black and align the cut out the foiled circle so it completes the image when the top of the design is at a corner point. I suppose it doesn’t matter the alignment as long as it fits on the back well, but for me, the corner was an apex for alignment. Fill the spaces with tape and glue, EXCEPT on the one corner that is at the top of the treat box so you can pull it up to get at the candy corn and refill it. This is the corner with the Washi Tape, Skulls, on it. You can see the square on the overexposed image.
- Add tape and glue to the back of the treat cup, add candy corn, and place the 4.5″ Black square over it, aligning the foiled circle after removing the tape and adding some glue. You will have a few moments to do any quick alignments.
- Put some ScorTape on the back of the 3″ Flame circle, that was cut out for the frame on the front, and place it on the inside. My circle is a little higher than the circle on the front since there is so much Black. Place where you like it best. Using your American Crafts, Thickers, Sentiment, put “treats” on the circle.
- I used Washi Tape, Skulls, 3 layers, to cover the open end of the Black square, to be sure the candy corn didn’t fall out. It holds very lightly so you can pull it easily and perhaps refill it.
- The Envelope: I score the sides and the bottom 1/4″ in and made a thin box out of it. I put some 1/8″ ScorTape around the flat sides and should have put some glue around it. After I put the American Crafts Glitter Tape, Rouge, 3/8-Inch, around it I had to go back and put the glue under the tape. I put about 1″ inside the envelope sides. I kept pushing the tape down until the glue stuck. I trimmed the side of the flap and scored it where the lid folds over and scored a second time, 1/2″ out. To add some body and flash, I lined the envelope with a piece of Flame that is 6.75″ wide and scored from one end, at 3″ and 3 3/8″. Put it in the envelope and trim the bottom to fit. Add ScorTape on the inside of the Black flap, slide the Flame inside the envelope. Line up the scored lines and push the Black flap onto the Flame. I used a corner punch to round the corners.
You can also just use the envelope as is and the card fits fine.
Enjoy!
