Q & A With Imeon Design
What is your favorite paper to work with?
I like working with text weight paper for most of what I create. At the moment the Extract line is a current favorite.
What do you like about this brand?
I have worked with brands that use post-consumer waste in their paper before, but Extract’s upcycling of disposable cups has taken it to another level. The texture has a vellum like feel, the colors are eye-catching, it’s sturdy even in text weight and I find it easy to work with.
What is your favorite paper color?
My current color crush is Mustard.
I was drawn to the richness and warmth of this color. I sampled it out as a bauble shape ornament and it is definitely a winner. It gives off a warm sweater, amber colored honey, falling leaves, mustard kind of vibe which I love.
What made you decide to get into this business?
Several years ago I was seeking a creative outlet while I was raising my young children as a stay at home parent. One day I heard about Etsy, perused other artists’ shops for ideas until something clicked and started from there.
What made you choose paper as your medium?
My dad was an architect, I was surrounded by his work as a child. He had a drafting table and would need to bring work home every now and then. I was intrigued by his drawings and utterly fascinated with the bond and vellum paper to which which the drawings lay on.
My mother dabbled in arts and crafts, some of which I have hanging on my walls. There was a paper kit she purchased, in it there were images of flowers printed multiple times, glue and glaze. The idea behind it is for the images to be cut out and glued in a layered fashion with the end resulting being three dimensional.
Needless to say I was greatly inspired by my surroundings as a child.
What is your favorite design and how did you come about to creating it?
I once saw a favor box in the shape of a cake slice made from doubled sided patterned paper, it was a simple design that I felt could be elevated somehow. I have found over time that I like layers, so I worked on a design until I ended up with a cake box slice that had flowers on top and a ribbon tied around the sides. This ended up being a really popular design that it ended up in book by Darcy Miller who works with Martha Stewart Weddings, a magazine and several blogs.
What has been the most rewarding aspect of your business so far?
One of the most rewarding aspect of my work is getting feedback from people who get to see what I’ve made. A woman from Australia contacted me about a cake box she received from a friend who gave it to her about a year prior. She kept it on her desk for inspiration, just knowing that she took the time to reach out to me is incredibly gratifying.
