Every day should be celebrated with cupcakes. Big ones, little ones, muffins, cookies or maybe slices of holiday breads. Now you can gift it in a 4″ square cupcake box, that is 3.5″ tall. This box is made for jumbo sized snacks, but you can downsize them for smaller items or add some tissue paper and more food. It would also be perfect for storing jewelry items, but back to the cupcakes. The bottom section is made from two pieces of paper: Bright Pink, and Curious SKIN, Purple: this time of year welcomes bright colors. The idea is to wind up with a 8.5″ x 11″ piece of paper folded in half so it is stronger and scored for two 4″ long sides with flaps for the bottom closure. Refer to the photos as you go along . The top is a separate piece of Curious SKIN, Purple. When you get all the folds done for the bottom box, push it together and it will come clear what you have to do. From there you are just taping it.
THE BOX: Start with a Basic Bright Pink and score the paper along the 8.5″ side, at .25″, 4.25″, and 8.25″, for a total of 8.5″. Turn the paper the long way and along the 11″ side score it at 2″, 7.5″ and 9″, for a total of 11″. It is a lot of scores, but it will come clear as you start folding. Do the Curious SKIN, Purple with the same scores.
Now you have two pieces of scored paper; start folding along the score lines. Fold each color of paper in half so you have two pieces that are 8.5″ X 5.5″. Flex the sides so you can see the box and refer to the photos.
You will see the bottom 2″ are for the flaps to make the box bottom. Cut off the flaps from the paper on the inside of the box; you only need the outside flaps for the bottom. Trim the inside layer about 1/8″ angled up the side so it doesn’t bulge out.
Now clip all of the .25″ flaps except those on the 3.5″ rise on the outside of the box; there is only 1 set of overlapping flaps of .25″ of each color at each seam, but they are crisscrossed at the seams. Refer to the photos: you can’ t see them on the inside.
Use 1/2″ ScorTape in the corners between the layers, on all (4).25″ flaps. Tuck one color of flap in-between the other color layer as you push the sides together, before you push the inside layer down. The extra tape will hold the paper down. Do this with the paper already folder over, just don’t push on the tape until it is all seated. There are lots of different ways to tape those corners, they will all work. Fold the 2″ flaps into a traditional box fold to make the bottom, or just tape them, it will all look good.
THE LID: using Curious SKIN, Purple, cut to 6.5 X 8.5 score a 4″ square in the middle, extending the lines all the way across the paper in both directions. Fold them so the sides flex. Refer to the photos and trim along the 1.25″ flaps leaving only the flaps along the square.
Bevel the edges and save the triangles, using them for trim on the box, along with some pink triangles.
Die cut a 3″ hole in the 4″ square and cover the hole from the inside with a scrap piece of packaging plastic using 1/4″ ScorTape. Making sure the lid and flaps fit inside the box, attach the lid at the back with ScorTape: this lid was attached with the flap on the inside, but it would be fine on the outside.
Since it is 3.5″ deep, this box will hold a jumbo cupcake with a small edible decoration tucked into the frosting. This box has the small edible Hello Kitty decoration on the front flap, glued on top of a small boa feather along with some shiny circles. There is ScorTape on the back of the flap to seal the box. Put that cupcake in the box and gift, or put some collectibles in the box and eat the cupcake.
Enjoy.
