Simple Way to Make a DIY Paper Topiary
There is never a wrong time to start a DIY project! If you’re here, chances are you enjoy crafting as much as I do. That’s not surprising. After all, I just read that 44% of Americans prefer taking on DIY projects themselves to hiring professionals or even buying ready-made stuff. Lately, with the new season inspiring me, I have been drawn to more green-themed crafts and what could be better than a DIY paper topiary?
There are no strict rules for creating one, but if you are curious about my process, you can check out the tutorial I created or continue reading as I guide you on how to make your DIY paper topiary and discuss which paper choices would be best for this project.

Simple Way to Make a DIY Paper Topiary
A DIY project is supposed to be fun and simple, so you should not stress over perfection. It’s up to you how you want to personalize your project. If you do not have a specific material or if you want to switch to a specific paper item, you can do that, as the final product is yours to keep!
Materials Needed
The materials I used to make a paper topiary were easily available and simple to work with. Here is what I used for this DIY project:
- A small pot to hold the topiary.
- Foam balls to form the base of the paper leaves.
- Sticks to act as the stem of the topiary.
- Plaster of Paris to stick to secure the stick.
- Green papers to create the leaves.
- Glue and mod pudge are used to attach and seal items.
- Paints and brushes for decoration and appeal.
- Tape and ivy glue to hold the things together.
Step-by-Step Process
It is quite easy to create a DIY paper topiary. You should not forget that you can customize it however you like. First, take a simple pot, brush some glue, and add gold leaves to give it some character. Cover any hole at the bottom with tape, then mix and pour Plaster of Paris inside. While it is still wet, insert a wooden stick with a foam ball on top and let it harden.
Now comes the part that I personally have so much fun with. Get the green papers that you have bought and cut out ivy-shaped (or any other shape) leaves. Fold them slightly to get a more natural look, glue them onto the foam ball, and give it a layering look. You can then add moss around the base for an extra touch of green and even pain the stick. Once it’s dry, you will have your finished product!
Papers Used in DIY Paper Topiary
All of the green papers I used for the leaves in this project were purchased from the PaperPapers shop. I used the Basis Green for a deep, rich color, but since it is being discontinued it’s best if you get them quickly while supplies last.
If you want a bit of a shine, the Stardream Metallic Fairway is a great choice, which I opted for as it adds a shimmer to the leaves. For a natural and muted tone, you can also select the Extract Cactus paper. Even the Poptone Sour Apple paper gave a bright green look to the leaves and made them pop out with a vibrant look.
Purchase Items From PaperPapers Shop
PaperPapers is a great choice for DIY projects as it offers a wide variety of paper options at affordable rates. In addition to paper materials, it has many other items helpful for creative ideas and decorative projects. It is worth checking out, especially if you want a quick delivery to your doorstep. Shop from them and start your fun crafting!
That is so cute. Time intensive and really cute. I knew it would be, and it was.
I love this topiary. Do you have a trick to make scoring go faster? I would like to make more but it
seems to take so long to score leaves.
Thank you for your tutorials!! You have such great projects!
Hi Rose, if you place this question onto the project ‘tutorial’ page, a team member will hopefully offer some help. Here’s the direct link to the instruction page. http://liagriffith.com/diy-paper-ivy-topiary/
