Give your Mother a bouquet to last forever with pop-up flowers. Start with Shine’s 7″ square envelope in Champagne. It has a pearlescent finish that glows from natural sheared metals. It is recyclable, biodegradable, acid, ligin and chlorine free, which is very important for permanence. For art work these are qualities that matter, for luminous beauty it is wonderful; it’s an impressive paper that has a lot of class for any presentation.
THE CARD is 6″ square, also from Champagne, 107 lb cover, cut to 6″ x 8.5″ and folded so it is 6″ square. The short flap is the front, so add some triangles of Curious Metallics, Gold Leaf, starting with 4″ squares, and decorate across the front: adjust them so they go to the edges of the back flap. The triangles are ScorTaped to the back of the front flap, then add a 2.75″ strip of Curious Metallics, Botanic, 80lb text, behind the triangles. Curious Metallics is a metallic iridescent that is also acid and chlorine free. The cover weight is best for the base card, but when used as a design element, the text works just fine; it is strong on its own. Repeat the Botanic on the inside of the card and add some die cut leaf designs in Curious Metallics, Fairway Green. To finish the front, stamp a message using Tim Holtz, Perfect Pearls, Copper, and seal it with Acrylic Spray Sealer. Trim it to a 2″ square and mount it on a 3″ square of Fairway Green. Before mounting it, add purple ribbon stripes to the front and inside of the card. Add the 1/2″ ScorTape first, then apply it, and no raveling ends. Mount the Mother’s Day message on the front.
THE ENVELOPE is scored 1/2″ down both sides and along the bottom. Fold it well and shape it into a box envelope with a classic gift bag fold: refer to the photos. The ribbon is ScorTaped before applying it and gives strength along the sides. The brads are added to hold the flaps while the glue dries. The flap is scored an extra 1″ out, which is enough to fold the envelope closed. The final size is 6.5″ tall and 6″ wide.
THE FLOWERS are from the Pop-Tone, Try-Me Pack: Pink Lemonade, and Bubblegum, both 65 lb cover. Add a text stamp, using Staz-On, to the 4″ squares before making the flowers. A Youtube video posted by Craft Videos for a Pop Up Flower Card Tutorial – Handmade that is the easiest and they have also included written instructions on the screen.
Just a few tips: read the instructions, especially the one about just gluing the tips of the petals. Her folds looked the easiest to make so the fold looked the easiest when she did it; just follow along. For this card, the ice cream cone stencil is 1.75″ tall. The surprise element is that the flowers are only glued on the very tips of the petals and stretches to open. If you glue the entire petal it won’t open. I did that and can honestly say that you can un-tape and un-glue the paper without either ruining the decorating inks or destroying the paper. I used Undo, paper towels and my finger nail, then redid it correctly. The flowers on the inside were decorated with various gel pens. After adding the Pink lines, randomly distress the edges with some copper on the petal tips and dark magenta chalk on either side of that. There are also blue gel pin glitter dots around the inside. Have some fun. Let the glue dry overnight with some paper clips on the tips and something heavy on the two edges. I use Cosmic Shimmer Glue since the working time is short and the results sturdy: use your favorite, but don’t use much. The flower floats in the card by two tiny little dots of glue on the two furthermost flowers; there is a layer of air under the flowers when it is open. From the front, add some tiny brads where the flowers attach to the card, and cover each brad flap on the inside with one of the cut out petals. Enjoy!
